The ancient city of Antiochus Ad Cragum is among the important ancient cities in Antalya province. It is located in Güneyköy Nohut Yeri in the Gazipaşa district of Antalya. The ancient city takes its name from King Antiochus IV of Commagene.

What Does Antiocheia Ad Cragum Mean?

It takes its name from Antiochus IV, the King of Commagene, who lived in the 1st century AD. Although the name evokes a certain association, it has no specific meaning.

The ruins of the ancient city are still being excavated on three hills that descend steeply towards the sea. The city is located within the boundaries of the region known in antiquity as "Mountainous Cilicia". The medieval fortress, agora, colonnaded street, church, baths, monumental gate, temple, tombs in the necropolis area, and triconhos are among the structures that have survived to the present day in this city, which was also inhabited during the Roman and Byzantine periods. The ancient city of Antiocheia Ad Cragum is open to visitors free of charge.

To which period does Antiocheia ad Cragum belong?

With the permission of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, a mythological Medusa figure was found in the ancient city of Antiocheia Ad Cragum in 2015 under the leadership of Professor Dr. Michael Hoff, a faculty member at the University of Nebraska. Snakes are still visible on Medusa's face and in her hair. The artifact is dated to approximately the 2nd or early 3rd century AD. Following the completion of conservation and restoration processes, the artifact is planned to be exhibited at the Alanya Museum.
